Garry P. Nolan is a Professor of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine and one of the world's leading immunologists. He holds a PhD in genetics from Cornell and has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers. He invented Palladium-based mass cytometry (CyTOF), an advanced analytical technology for characterising complex biological samples at the single-cell level, which is now widely used in cancer research, immunology, and clinical diagnostics. Nolan began engaging with UAP-related materials around 2011 when he was contacted by the intelligence community — he has stated that he was approached and asked to use his analytical capabilities to examine individuals who had been harmed by proximity to UAP. Over the following decade, he analysed medical imaging data from dozens of such individuals and developed a research programme on the neurological and physiological effects of UAP encounters.

Using his mass cytometry and medical imaging capabilities, he examined brain scans of multiple experiencers — including intelligence and military personnel who had been harmed or significantly affected by UAP encounters — and found anomalous patterns: unusual density in the basal ganglia region associated with pattern recognition and unconscious processing. He has argued that these individuals appear to have a neurological profile that distinguishes them from controls — a profile he has tentatively associated with heightened sensitivity to anomalous stimuli.
He has also been involved in analysis of physical materials alleged to be associated with UAP — applying his analytical techniques to samples whose provenance he declines to detail publicly. His statements about these analyses have been carefully bounded by his security obligations, but he has confirmed that some materials he examined showed properties he could not account for using conventional materials science.
Nolan led the scientific analysis of "Ata" — a small, unusual skeletal specimen from the Atacama Desert of Chile, which had circulated in UFO circles as a possible alien body. His genomic analysis, published in Genome Research (2018), established that Ata was a human being — a premature infant with multiple rare mutations causing severe skeletal abnormalities — definitively closing the alien hypothesis for that specific specimen. His willingness to apply rigorous science to a sensationalist claim, following the evidence wherever it led, is characteristic of his broader methodological approach.
