📡 Ummites (Planet Ummo)

Overview

The Ummites claim to originate from planet Ummo, orbiting the star Wolf 424 (also known as FL Virginis), a binary red dwarf system approximately 14.1 light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. Wolf 424 is a real star system — the 44th nearest star system to Earth — though no planets have been confirmed in the Wolf 424 system by modern astronomical observation.

Beginning around February 1966, letters began arriving at addresses across Spain — to Fernando Sesma Manzano (a Madrid-based UFO researcher and contact claimant), to scientists, journalists, doctors, and eventually to researchers internationally. The letters were written in fluent Spanish, typed on standard typewriters, and bore a distinctive symbol: a cross with a vertical line through it, or variations thereof — a symbol the letters identified as representing the Ummite letter Ʒ (their alphabet's representation of a specific concept in their name for Earth, "OYAAA").

Physical Description

The letters themselves provide detailed biological self-descriptions, supplemented by the few reported face-to-face encounters:

• Appearance: Virtually indistinguishable from humans, described in the letters as approximately equivalent in height and build to Northern Europeans. Several reported face-to-face encounters describe beings of entirely normal human appearance.
• Height: Approximately 5.5–6 ft; standard human range.
• Skin: Slightly paler than typical Mediterranean European; fine-featured.
• Distinguishing biology (from letters): Sensory organs functioning differently from human equivalents — different chemical composition of sensory receptors for smell/taste. Blood biochemistry with different oxygen-carrying molecules (letters describe a non-hemoglobin oxygen transport mechanism). A different reproductive physiology described in some detail in specific letters.
• Psychological profile: The letters describe Ummites as constitutionally incapable of lying in the fashion humans lie — their psychology oriented toward precision and truth as a biological tendency, not merely a cultural value.

The Ummo Letters

Over more than two decades (1966 into the 1990s), approximately 1,000+ letters were distributed across Spain and internationally. The letters are remarkable for several reasons:

• Physical sciences content: Several letters contain discussions of physics that, when written in the mid-1960s, described concepts that only became mainstream in theoretical physics in subsequent decades — including ideas relating to string-like entities, multidimensional topology, and non-standard cosmology. Physicist Jacques Vallée investigated the letters and noted this content as particularly difficult to explain through straightforward hoaxing in 1966.
• Internal consistency: The letters are internally consistent across decades and across multiple claimed authors within Ummite civilization — a consistency that implies either a genuine unified source or an extraordinarily dedicated and knowledgeable hoaxer.
• Ummite language: The letters describe and partially document an Ummite alphabet and linguistic structure — a detailed constructed language that predates the modern trend of constructed language creation and is internally coherent.
• Philosophical content: Extensive letters cover Ummite philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, and sociology — sophisticated material engaging with questions in ways that resonated with academic philosophers who studied the correspondence.

The Aluche Landing (February 6, 1966)

On February 6, 1966, in the Aluche district of southwestern Madrid, multiple witnesses reported observing a disc-shaped craft with a distinctive symbol (matching the Ummite symbol) land briefly in a public area before departing. Landing traces were investigated: a slightly scorched circular area and soil compression marks. The event was reported to local authorities and investigated by Spanish researchers. The timing — coinciding with the earliest letters — and the presence of the symbol connecting the physical event to the letter correspondence is among the most compelling aspects of the Ummo case.

The Confession and Its Problems

In 1993, José Luis Jordan Peña, a Spanish psychologist, claimed responsibility for the entire Ummo correspondence as a "psycho-sociological experiment" — essentially claiming to have hoaxed the entire letter series. This claim created as many problems as it resolved:

• Jordan Peña's claimed hoax would have required producing physics content in 1966 that anticipated theoretical developments by a decade or more — difficult to reconcile with his academic background.
• The Aluche physical landing event (and its corroborating witnesses) occurred independently of the letter correspondence and would require separate explanation.
• Researchers Antonio Ribera and Jacques Vallée found Jordan Peña's confession inconsistent with aspects of the case that he would have needed to know to have produced the letters as claimed.
• Jordan Peña's own credibility was questioned; some researchers suggested his confession was itself a disinformation operation.
• Some letters continued to arrive after Jordan Peña's confession — letters he could not have sent from prison (where he was briefly incarcerated on unrelated charges).

The Ummo case therefore occupies a uniquely ambiguous position: the most elegantly "explained" major contact case that actually remains significantly unexplained even after its proposed explanation.

Russian Alien Races Book

The Russian Alien Races Book documents a species identified as originating from the Wolf 424 region — described as peaceful, philosophical, and particularly interested in human intellectual and spiritual development. The behavioral profile in the handbook — communicative, non-aggressive, oriented toward observation and dialogue — is consistent with the EBEN portrait emerging from the Ummo letters.
