The Trickster or Control System class is not a discrete entity type but a proposed functional category: intelligences or phenomena characterised primarily by their apparent deceptive, paradox-inducing, or culturally-adaptive behaviour. The defining characteristic is not what these entities are but what they appear to do: manipulate perception, induce confusion, provide false information, stage events calibrated to be simultaneously convincing and impossible to verify, and adapt their apparent form to match the cultural expectations and symbolic vocabulary of their target audience. This framework is associated most rigorously with Jacques Vallรฉe and John Keel but has roots in shamanic traditions worldwide.
Jacques Vallรฉe's control system framework, developed in The Invisible College (1975) and elaborated in Messengers of Deception (1979) and Confrontations (1990), proposes that the UAP phenomenon functions as a system for modifying human consciousness and behaviour at a civilisational scale. Key observations that drove this conclusion:
Vallรฉe explicitly did not claim to know the origin or purpose of this control system โ whether it is operated by NHI, by human agencies, by some combination, or by some category of intelligence not yet conceptualised. His contribution was to characterise the functional profile and argue that this profile was inconsistent with any simple extraterrestrial explanation.
John Keel's version of the control system was darker and more adversarial than Vallรฉe's. Based on his fieldwork in the period 1966โ1967 โ particularly the West Virginia Mothman flap and its context of intense UAP activity, Men in Black visits, poltergeist phenomena, and apparent precognitive communications โ Keel concluded that the phenomenon actively created the contactee movement, fed false information through selected individuals to serve its own purposes, and was not benevolent.
Keel's Mothman investigation documented apparent telepathic communications to witnesses predicting (with surprising accuracy) events in the months before the December 1967 Silver Bridge collapse that killed 46 people. Keel's interpretation was that these communications were not warnings but provocations โ that the phenomenon was involved in the events that led to the tragedy, or at minimum was aware of them in advance and chose not to prevent them. This led Keel to frame the phenomenon as fundamentally predatory or at least indifferent to human welfare.
The Men in Black phenomenon, documented extensively by Keel and researcher Albert Bender before him, represents a specific sub-category of trickster intelligence: apparently human figures who visit UAP witnesses to discourage disclosure, demonstrate impossible knowledge of the witnesses' activities, and occasionally display non-human physical characteristics (over-large eyes, unsuitable clothing for the climate, unfamiliarity with ordinary objects). Keel proposed that the MIBs were manifestations of the same intelligence operating in physical human form โ not government agents in the conventional sense.
The Trickster archetype โ a figure found in virtually every world mythology โ shares striking characteristics with the Trickster intelligence category: shape-shifting ability, deceptive intelligence, violation of boundaries between the human and supernatural worlds, provision of technology or knowledge that turns out to be double-edged, and a fundamentally ambiguous moral character that is neither purely malevolent nor reliably benevolent.
Mythological tricksters include Loki (Norse), Coyote (various Native American traditions), Hermes/Mercury (Greco-Roman โ psychopomp, messenger, thief), Anansi (West African/Akan), Raven (Pacific Northwest), and Eshu/Elegba (Yoruba โ divine trickster who controls crossroads between worlds). Folklorist Lewis Hyde's Trickster Makes This World (1998) provides the most comprehensive analysis of the archetype's structure and function.
The application of this framework to UAP entities was developed most completely by Chris O'Brien in Stalking the Tricksters (2009) and in Vallรฉe's comparative work. The relevance is not that folklore entities and UAP entities are the same thing but that the behavioural profile โ the manipulation, the boundary-crossing, the provision of knowledge at a cost โ is sufficiently consistent across millennia and cultures to suggest a stable phenomenon underlying diverse cultural interpretations.
Some high-strangeness accounts describe events that appear designed to prevent verification: physical objects that vanish before examination, photographs that turn out blank despite the camera functioning, multiple witnesses who remember events differently in ways that resist a single factual account. Researcher Peter Rojcewicz, a folklorist, proposed in his doctoral research that anomalous encounters may represent a fundamental challenge to the witness's reality framework โ a pedagogical function of disrupting complacency โ rather than a simple physical event.
The phenomenon-adaptive intelligence concept extends this: the intelligence alters its behaviour based on the observer's framework, consistently remaining one step ahead of whatever explanatory model is brought to bear. UFO researcher Greg Bishop has documented numerous cases in which investigators experienced the phenomenon intensify precisely when they were closest to obtaining clean evidence โ as if the phenomenon were maintaining a specific minimum level of ambiguity.
