Overview

Between November 1989 and April 1991, Belgium experienced one of the most extensively documented waves of UAP sightings in history. Over 13,500 individuals reported witnessing anomalous aerial phenomena during this period, of whom more than 2,600 filed formal written statements with the Belgian Air Force and the Belgian Society for the Study of Space Phenomena (SOBEPS). The witnesses included police officers, military personnel, airline pilots, physicians, scientists, and a broad cross-section of the Belgian public.

The craft described with remarkable consistency was a large, silent, low-flying triangular or delta-shaped object with a bright light at each corner and a central rotating or flashing light. The object moved at extremely low speed โ€” often described as hovering or drifting silently โ€” and demonstrated startling performance anomalies when observed on radar and visually: the ability to accelerate instantaneously from near-hovering to extreme velocity, to perform sharp-angle turns, and to descend vertically at speeds in excess of known aircraft capabilities. The Belgian Wave is unique in UAP research for the degree of official military involvement, transparency, and cooperation between the Belgian Air Force and civilian researchers.

First Sighting: November 29, 1989 โ€” Eupen

The wave began in earnest on the evening of November 29, 1989, when gendarmerie officers Warrant Officers Heinrich Nicoll and Hubert von Montigny, on patrol near the town of Eupen in eastern Belgium near the German border, observed a large triangular craft hovering at low altitude over a field. The officers stopped their patrol vehicle, exited, and spent approximately thirty minutes observing the craft at close range. They described a flat, triangular platform approximately the size of a football pitch, with a powerful white spotlight at each corner and a pulsating central dome. The craft moved soundlessly and then departed slowly toward Liรจge.

The gendarmes radioed their report to superiors, and over the following hours dozens of other sightings were reported from towns across the provinces of Liรจge and Namur. The Belgian Air Force detected radar returns over the same area that evening. The November 29 event established the template for hundreds of subsequent sightings: consistent description of a triangular, silent, low-flying craft with the same light configuration, by multiple independent witnesses at different locations.

The F-16 Scramble: March 30โ€“31, 1990

The most operationally significant event of the Belgian Wave occurred on the night of March 30โ€“31, 1990, when NATO ground radar stations at Glons and Semmerzake detected an unknown object over Belgian territory. At 0005 local time, two Belgian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons were scrambled to intercept. This event is unique in modern UAP history: an official, documented case in which a national air force scrambled combat aircraft to pursue an unidentified aerial object, with the entire sequence recorded on official radar tapes and subsequently released to researchers and the public.

The F-16s attempted three radar lock-ons over approximately one hour of pursuit. On each occasion that the aircraft achieved a lock and the targeting radar locked on the object, the object performed instantaneous evasive manoeuvres far beyond the F-16s' capability. The ground radar and airborne radar data showed the object dropping from 9,000 to 5,000 feet in one second โ€” implying an acceleration of approximately 40 g โ€” then accelerating horizontally, then descending toward the ground at speeds beyond the fighters' capability to follow. One of the F-16 pilots reported that the object's radar signature shifted and disappeared when it descended to near-ground altitude.

The radar tapes from this intercept were made available to SOBEPS and have been analysed by independent experts over the intervening decades. At the press conference following the F-16 scramble, Colonel Wilfried De Brouwer, head of the Belgian Air Force operations, stated publicly: "The phenomenon is not attributable to any known natural phenomenon, nor to any known military aircraft, American, Soviet, or Belgian." De Brouwer's statement, made in his official capacity, is one of the most direct official military acknowledgements of a genuine UAP anomaly on record.

SOBEPS Investigation and the Official Cooperation

The SOBEPS (Sociรฉtรฉ Belge d'Etude des Phรฉnomรจnes Spatiaux) was a civilian UFO research organisation that benefited from an extraordinary degree of official cooperation during the wave. The Belgian Air Force gave SOBEPS access to radar tapes, pilot debriefs, and official correspondence โ€” a level of transparency without precedent in UAP research globally. SOBEPS produced a comprehensive two-volume investigation report, Vague d'OVNI sur la Belgique (1991 and 1994), totalling over 600 pages, which remains one of the most thorough official-civilian joint investigations into a UAP wave ever conducted.

The report confirmed that the phenomena could not be explained by conventional aircraft, misidentified natural phenomena, atmospheric optics, or psychological factors, given the consistency of reports from trained observers under varying conditions. The Belgian Air Force cooperated because, as De Brouwer stated, they genuinely did not know what the objects were and considered the transparency of a joint investigation preferable to the appearance of a cover-up. This attitude contrasted sharply with the response of the U.S. and British governments to comparable events.

The Petit-Rechain Photograph

The most widely circulated image associated with the Belgian Wave was a photograph taken in April 1990 near Petit-Rechain by an anonymous photographer, showing a triangular object with bright lights at each corner against a dark sky. The image became iconic in UAP literature and was published in hundreds of books and articles over two decades, described as one of the best photographic evidences of a UAP.

In 2011, however, the photographer โ€” who by then had chosen to identify himself โ€” publicly admitted that the photograph was a hoax constructed from a piece of foam, paint, and electrical bulbs. The admission was a significant blow to the Belgian Wave's photographic evidence base and is widely cited by sceptics. Researchers have pointed out, however, that the Petit-Rechain photograph was only one element of a much larger body of evidence including radar data, official military testimony, thousands of witness reports, and the F-16 radar tapes โ€” none of which were affected by the photograph's debunking. De Brouwer specifically stated after the revelation that the photograph's status did not alter the operational reality of what the Belgian Air Force had tracked and intercepted.

Craft Description and Performance Anomalies

The consistent description across thousands of independent reports is of a large, flat, equilateral triangular or delta-shaped craft with the following characteristics:

Comparison to Phoenix Lights and Global Context

The Belgian Wave triangular craft description is strikingly similar to that reported in the Phoenix Lights V-formation of March 13, 1997 โ€” a large, silent, slow-moving triangular or V-shaped structure with lights at fixed positions, no audible propulsion, and apparent awareness of observer presence. Both events involved thousands of witnesses, both included credible high-status observers, and both resulted in official acknowledgements that the phenomena were unexplained. Whether they represent the same or related phenomena is an open question; if so, the Belgian case provides radar confirmation of the category of object widely reported over Arizona seven years later.

The Belgian Wave remains the most extensively documented UAP wave in history in terms of the combination of witness numbers, official military engagement, independent radar confirmation, official investigation cooperation, and published documentation. It is a foundational case for any serious study of the triangular UAP phenomenon and for the question of how governments and military organisations should respond to genuinely unknown aerial phenomena.
