Mantoids occupy an intermediate morphological and functional position within the insectoid NHI typology — sharing structural features with the Mantid type while exhibiting a significantly more humanoid body plan and a behavioral profile oriented toward technical, analytical, and research functions rather than the supervisory or wisdom-bearing role characteristic of true Mantids. The Mantoid designation appears in the contact and abduction research literature most frequently in cases where experiencers describe beings who are "almost mantid" but wrong in key ways: slightly different proportions, greater smoothness to the integument, less dramatic eye structures, and behavior that suggests operation within a specialized technical role rather than the free-standing authority associated with Mantid encounters. Some researchers treat Mantoids as a separate species; others propose a bio-engineered or hybridized origin, suggesting that Mantoids may represent a deliberately created intermediate form whose purpose is to bridge interaction between fully insectoid intelligences and the beings (including humans) with whom those intelligences require a more accessible interface.

Physical Description

Height: 5–6.5 ft — generally shorter than Mantids and with a less dramatically elongated body plan. The overall impression is of a scaled-back or compressed version of the Mantid form, with the most extreme insectoid features moderated toward the humanoid.

Several accounts describe the eye area as still non-human but describable as "large dark eyes" rather than the overwhelming compound structures typical of Mantid descriptions. Arms: Multi-joint, but the excess length and dramatic multi-point articulation of Mantid arms is moderated — Mantoid arms are described as long for a humanoid-adjacent frame, but not to the degree that Mantid arms are described as seemingly physically impossible for a ground-dwelling organism.
Integument: The chitinous quality is present but less pronounced — described by many experiencers as closer to smooth, hard skin than to visible segmented exoskeleton. The surface does not exhibit the visible joint-segment architecture typical of Mantid or generic insectoid forms; it reads more as smooth carapace. Some accounts describe a slightly translucent quality to areas of the integument, particularly around the neck and head.

Technical and analytical orientation: Mantoids appear in the research literature predominantly in contexts involving data collection, biological examination, device operation, or assessment procedures. They handle instruments; they examine and measure; they record or catalog. This functional profile contrasts sharply with the Mantid supervisor-observer role and with the generic insectoid collective-task pattern.
Intermediate species role: A striking feature of Mantoid placement in multi-species encounters is their apparent role as intermediaries — positioned between more fully insectoid beings (Mantids, generic insectoids) and less insectoid ones (Greys, hybrids). Several researchers have proposed that Mantoids function as translators, liaisons, or interface specialists — beings capable of engaging with both ends of the biological-diversity spectrum present in multi-species encounter settings.
Individual vs. collective: Mantoids occupy a middle position between the highly individuated Mantid and the collective-intelligence generic insectoid. They operate as individuals capable of independent decision-making and task management, but there is less of the strong personal identity and cross-encounter recognition reported for Mantids. Mantoid cases rarely involve the same individual recognized across multiple encounters.
Curiosity: Several experiencers describe a quality of active intellectual curiosity in Mantoid interactions — an interest in the human experiencer that goes beyond the procedural requirements of whatever task is being performed. This contrasts with the flat procedural affect of generic insectoids and the serene observational distance of Mantids; Mantoids appear actively interested in the humans they encounter, in an analytical rather than emotional way.
Calm efficiency: Described as very calm, methodical, and precise in all actions — no urgency, no aggression, no apparent emotion-driven behavior. Their efficiency is described as different in quality from the mechanical efficiency of generic insectoids: Mantoid efficiency reads as skilled professional competence rather than programmed task-execution.
Deferential to Mantids: In encounters where both types are present, Mantoids are clearly subordinate to Mantid beings — pausing activity when the Mantid moves, directing attention to the Mantid before proceeding with changes to their activity. This hierarchical relationship is consistent across accounts.

Bio-Engineered Origin Hypothesis

The intermediate morphological position of Mantoids — less extreme than Mantids, more structured than Greys, and specifically positioned at the functional interface between species in multi-species encounters — has led several researchers to propose that Mantoids are not a naturally evolved species but a deliberately engineered one. Arguments cited in support of this hypothesis:

Morphological in-between position: The Mantoid body plan occupies a precise middle ground between multiple types in ways that do not fit a standard evolutionary trajectory. Natural selection does not typically produce beings whose primary morphological function appears to be "intermediate" between other species; engineering does.
Functional specificity: The Mantoid behavioral profile — specifically the intermediary and technical-analysis role — suggests a being designed for a specific niche within a multi-species operational structure rather than a generalized natural species adapting to a role.
Smooth integument: The notably smooth carapace, lacking the visible segmentation of other insectoid types, has been interpreted as a feature consistent with designed rather than evolved biology — an integument optimized for non-threatening appearance and efficient sensory function rather than for predator-prey or environmental survival.
Parallel to Grey hybridization program: If the Grey hybridization program documented by Jacobs and others is real, it provides a proof-of-concept for bio-engineering beings to fill specific roles within a multi-species operation. Mantoids may represent a parallel or prior application of the same engineering capability, applied to the insectoid lineage rather than the humanoid one.

Researchers who prefer a natural-species interpretation note that the insectoid order on Earth encompasses enormous morphological diversity with transitions between body plan types — there is no inherent reason that a naturally evolved insectoid species must conform to the dramatic Mantid morphology rather than occupying a more intermediate form. The bio-engineering hypothesis, while intriguing, is not necessitated by the available data.
