Overview

Kozyrev mirrors are curved, reflective aluminium or stainless-steel enclosures โ€” typically formed into a helix, cone, or cylindrical spiral โ€” used in Russian experimental research from the 1970s onward to study alleged alterations in consciousness, extrasensory perception, and human biofield interaction. The devices take their name from Nikolai Alexandrovich Kozyrev (1908โ€“1983), the Soviet astrophysicist whose theoretical work on time, causality, and torsion fields provided the conceptual underpinning for the research, though Kozyrev himself did not design or use the mirror structures. The actual experimental programme was developed by Vlail Petrovich Kaznacheev (1924โ€“2014) and his colleague Alexander Trofimov at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Novosibirsk, Siberia, beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the post-Soviet period. Nikolai Kozyrev: The Theoretical Basis

Nikolai Kozyrev was a distinguished Soviet astrophysicist who worked at the Pulkovo Observatory near Leningrad. His mainstream contributions included studies of the Moon's and Venus's thermal properties, and the 1958 observation of apparent volcanic activity on the Moon's surface at crater Alphonsus โ€” a claimed observation that attracted international attention. His heterodox work centred on a proposed physical medium he called time-flow or time density โ€” a non-electromagnetic causal medium that he argued penetrated all matter, propagated instantaneously or at superluminal speed, and carried information between causally connected events.

Kozyrev described time not as a passive geometrical dimension but as an active physical substance capable of performing mechanical work. He conducted a series of experiments from the 1950s through the 1970s in which he claimed to measure the density and directional flow of this time-substance using precision gyroscopes, torsion balances, and vibrating strings. His measurements purportedly showed that time-density varied with biological activity, stellar positions, and thermodynamic processes โ€” and that these variations could be detected by sensitive physical instruments. Kozyrev argued that the Sun and stars radiated time-density as a form of information, allowing what he called stellar consciousness: an instantaneous causal connection between astronomical bodies and life on Earth.

Mainstream physics has not accepted Kozyrev's torsion field framework, and his experimental results have not been independently replicated under controlled conditions. However, his theoretical ideas were extremely influential within the Soviet biophysics and psychotronics communities and remain the conceptual basis for mirror consciousness research.

Kaznacheev's Experiments and the Mirror Design

Vlail Kaznacheev was a Soviet biomedical scientist and full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences who directed the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Novosibirsk for decades. His foundational research in the 1970s established what he called distant cell interactions โ€” the claimed ability of cellular cultures separated by glass barriers to transmit pathological information to healthy cultures via some non-chemical, non-electromagnetic channel he termed mitogenic radiation or biophoton communication. Kaznacheev argued these cell-to-cell communications were mediated by ultraviolet biophotons and by the torsion fields Kozyrev had described.

Drawing on Kozyrev's idea that curved reflective surfaces might focus or redirect torsion-field flows, Kaznacheev and Trofimov developed a structure they called the Kozyrev mirror: a helix of aluminium foil or polished metal sheet wound in a left-handed spiral and formed into a cylinder or conic section large enough for a seated human subject. The geometry was chosen on the theoretical basis that a left-handed spiral would concentrate and reflect inward the torsion component of electromagnetic radiation, creating a field-intensified region at the centre of the device. The subject seated inside โ€” shielded from conventional electromagnetic noise by the metal walls โ€” would thus be exposed to an enhanced torsion-field environment while being protected from ordinary sensory input.

The standard Kozyrev mirror apparatus consists of a cylinder of polished aluminium or stainless-steel sheet rolled into a left-handed helix approximately 1.5โ€“2 metres in height and 1โ€“1.5 metres in diameter โ€” large enough for a subject to be seated inside on a low chair. The inner surface is the reflective face.
