A lucid dream is a dream in which the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming while the dream continues. In many cases this awareness extends to varying degrees of voluntary control over the dream environment and narrative. Lucid dreaming occupies a unique phenomenological position as a state of simultaneous sleep (verified by EEG) and self-reflective consciousness โ challenging simple binary distinctions between sleeping and waking awareness.
The existence of lucid dreaming as a genuine physiological state was first objectively verified by Keith Hearne at Hull University in 1975. Hearne trained subjects to signal lucidity onset via pre-agreed volitional eye movements (left-right-left-right) visible on the polysomnographic EOG (electro-oculogram) while the EEG confirmed REM sleep. His work was not widely published at the time. Stephen LaBerge at Stanford independently replicated and extended this method in 1980, publishing it in Perceptual and Motor Skills, and became the primary figure in subsequent scientific lucid dream research.

Lucid dreaming intersects with parapsychological research in several ways. The WILD transition closely parallels descriptions of out-of-body experience (OBE) induction from sleep โ researchers including Robert Monroe (Monroe Institute) described entering OBE states from the sleep-onset hypnagogic state in methods phenomenologically identical to WILD. Whether these represent the same state with different interpretive frameworks is debated. Pilot psi studies conducted in the lucid dream state โ using the eye-signal protocol to confirm ongoing REM during psi tasks โ have produced tentatively positive results in some trials.
