Loch Ness โ a deep, peat-darkened freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands, approximately 37 kilometres long, 2.7 kilometres wide, and 230 metres deep โ has produced consistent accounts of an unknown large animal since the sixth century CE, when Saint Columba reportedly encountered a beast in the River Ness. The "Surgeon's Photograph" (1934) โ purportedly taken by gynaecologist Robert Kenneth Wilson, showing a long-necked head and neck above the water โ was the defining image of the Nessie archetype for sixty years. In 1994, Christian Spurling and Marmaduke Wetherell's family confirmed the photograph was a hoax using a toy submarine fitted with a sculpted neck; the deception was reportedly motivated by revenge against the Daily Mail. The exposure of the Surgeon's Photograph as a hoax was widely reported as discrediting Loch Ness research generally, though researchers note it discredits only one photograph and not the broader witness and sonar record.
Sonar surveys represent the most methodologically rigorous line of evidence. Lake Champlain's "Champ" has been reported since the early nineteenth century, with the indigenous Abenaki people's traditional knowledge of a large lake creature providing pre-European context. The lake โ 172 km long, 19 km wide, and 122 m deep โ provides sufficient habitat for a large aquatic animal. Samuel de Champlain's 1609 journals are sometimes cited as the first Western documentation, though the relevant passage may describe a known large fish rather than an unknown animal. The most significant physical evidence is the Mansi Photograph (1977), taken by Sandra Mansi showing what appears to be a long-necked animal at the surface; Mansi misplaced the negative for several years, limiting technical analysis.
