The interdimensional hypothesis proposes that the reported NHI phenomenon involves intelligences operating from dimensions or reality-states other than ordinary three-dimensional space-time. This framework, developed independently by several researchers, attempts to account for the seemingly impossible physical behaviour of UAPs — near-instantaneous acceleration, right-angle turns, disappearance into solid matter, materialisation and dematerialisation — and the trickster-like phenomenological character of encounters.
Jacques Vallée (b. 1939) — astrophysicist, computer scientist, and the most rigorously analytical researcher in the UAP field — developed the interdimensional framework in several landmark books. Passport to Magonia (1969) established the key comparative argument: that the modern UFO phenomenon is phenomenologically continuous with historical accounts of fairies, demons, angels, and apparitions across all cultures. Vallée argued that the beings involved are not visitors from other star systems but operatives of a control system that manifests in whatever form is culturally intelligible to its audience.
In The Invisible College (1975) and Dimensions (1988), Vallée developed the physical framework: if the beings operate from a higher-dimensional space, they could appear and disappear from our three-dimensional environment at will, produce physical traces, and exhibit the apparent violation of conservation-of-momentum physics observed in UAP behaviour. Vallée explicitly drew on the mathematical concept of a manifold of higher dimensionality intersecting our three-space, which in modern terms maps loosely to Kaluza-Klein extra dimensions or Calabi-Yau manifolds in string theory — though Vallée was careful not to claim the physics was understood.
Vallée coined the term "meta-logic" to describe the apparent structure of phenomenon encounters, which seem designed to violate the witness's expectations and induce cognitive dissonance rather than to communicate specific information. He argued that a straightforward extraterrestrial contact scenario would look very different from what is actually reported.
John Keel (1930–2009), journalist and investigator, arrived at a similar framework independently through fieldwork in the late 1960s. Keel's concept of the "Superspectrum" — developed in UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse (1970) and The Mothman Prophecies (1975) — proposed that UAP intelligences exist in a frequency range of reality adjacent to but normally imperceptible by human senses. In this model, the phenomenon can "tune in" to human perception under certain conditions, appearing as whatever form is most culturally resonant.
Keel's fieldwork in Point Pleasant, West Virginia (1966–67) during the Mothman flap — a period of intense UAP activity, poltergeist phenomena, apparent precognitive communications through contactees, and the collapse of the Silver Bridge — led him to conclude that the phenomenon was actively deceiving its witnesses: providing false information through contactees, staging displays calibrated to elicit specific psychological responses, and orchestrating events that culminated in apparent genuine tragedies (the bridge collapse on December 15, 1967, killed 46 people). Keel's conclusion that the phenomenon is intrinsically adversarial and deceptive places him closer to Category X (Trickster class) than to neutral interdimensionalism.
Shadow beings — described as dark, featureless, human-shaped or humanoid presences that appear silhouetted against walls or ceilings, typically in states of hypnagogia (sleep paralysis onset) or full waking — are among the most universally reported paranormal experiences across cultures. The sleep paralysis association is scientifically well-established: the "old hag" phenomenon, kanashibari in Japanese tradition, and similar culture-specific names describe the same neurological event. However, a subset of shadow being reports occurs outside sleep contexts, in full waking states and in groups, that resist the sleep paralysis explanation.
The Hat Man — a specific variant described as a tall, dark male figure wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sometimes a coat or cloak — has been reported independently by thousands of individuals worldwide, with a consistency of description notable enough that researcher Heidi Hollis has collected thousands of testimonies and published The Hat Man: The True Story of Evil Encounters (2014). The cross-cultural and cross-temporal consistency of the Hat Man description — which extends to pre-modern accounts in medieval European witch trial records and similar figures in Mesoamerican art — is anomalous if the experience is purely neurologically generated.
The hitchhiker phenomenon refers to the reported tendency of anomalous events — UAP sightings, paranormal occurrences, poltergeist activity, anomalous entity encounters — to "attach" to or follow witnesses after an initial encounter, manifesting in the witness's home and spreading to family members and in some cases investigators. The term was popularised by Colm Kelleher and George Knapp in Hunt for the Skinwalker (2005), documenting their investigation of the Sherman Ranch (Skinwalker Ranch) in Utah, where the phenomenon appeared to spread from the property to researchers who visited it.
Skinwalker Ranch — a 512-acre property in the Uintah Basin, Utah, purchased by the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) in 1996 — produced some of the most intensive multi-witness, multi-instrumented documentation of the hitchhiker effect. Kelleher, a molecular biologist, and a team of trained scientists documented cattle mutilations, poltergeist phenomena, UAP sightings, portal-like luminous structures, and apparent entity encounters across several years of residency. The ranch was subsequently acquired by Robert Bigelow (Bigelow Aerospace) and later by Brandon Fugal, and has been the subject of a History Channel documentary series. The hitchhiker effect is extensively documented in the literature but poorly theorised: it suggests that the phenomenon is not geographically fixed but can transfer through some mechanism related to directed attention or physical presence.
The future human hypothesis — also called the temporal hypothesis — proposes that the Grey-type beings are not from another star but from Earth's own future: evolved or genetically modified descendants of Homo sapiens who have acquired time travel capability and are conducting biological research in our era. The hypothesis was formally proposed by researcher Mac Tonnies as one of several alternatives to the extraterrestrial model, and is associated with physicist and author Bruce Goldberg, who has written extensively on hypnotic regression cases in which subjects describe their abductors as time travellers.
The morphological argument is sometimes advanced: large craniums, small bodies, vestigial mouths, and large eyes could represent evolutionary or designed adaptations to indoor, technology-mediated, low-gravity environments over tens of thousands of years. The noted preoccupation with human genetics in abduction scenarios — genetic sampling, reproductive procedures, apparent interest in biological diversity — makes intuitive sense for a future humanity facing genetic bottlenecks, rather than for a completely alien species with no biological connection to humans.
The hypothesis faces severe challenges from the direction of physics: the feasibility of closed timelike curves under known physics remains deeply uncertain, and closed-loop causality paradoxes would need resolution. It has nevertheless attracted serious philosophical attention as the most parsimonious explanation for certain features of the abduction literature.
Related but distinct from the temporal hypothesis, parallel-world entities are proposed to inhabit variant branches of physical reality — as in Everettian many-worlds interpretations of quantum mechanics — that overlap with our own branch under certain conditions. This remains the most speculative of the interdimensional frameworks, lacking any clear mechanism for cross-branch interaction. It is mentioned in the literature primarily by researchers who note that the phenomenon's apparent violation of conservation laws is most elegantly explained by an energy source or physical substrate outside our local branch of the wave function.
