Unlike casual psychic impressions, remote viewing as developed in government programmes is a structured, protocol-driven discipline โ one that emphasises controlled conditions, blinding procedures, and the systematic collection of impressions before any feedback is given.
The central concept in remote viewing is the signal line โ a theoretical carrier of information from the target to the viewer's subconscious. The viewer's task is not to force a clear image of the target but to tune in to this signal line, capturing raw sensory impressions (textures, colours, shapes, temperatures, emotional tones) before the analytical mind can construct a story or interpretation. This process of suppressing interpretation is called avoiding analytical overlay (AOL).
Remote viewing is distinct from astral projection or out-of-body experiences (OBEs) in an important way: the viewer's consciousness does not "travel" to the target. Rather, information about the target appears to arise in the viewer's awareness through a process that remains scientifically unexplained โ but one that is repeatable, trainable, and documentable under controlled conditions.
Remote viewing takes two main forms. Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) โ also called Coordinate Remote Viewing, the name under which it was developed โ is a highly structured, stage-based protocol developed by artist and psychic researcher Ingo Swann in collaboration with SRI scientists. CRV breaks the viewing session into six discrete stages, each probing progressively deeper layers of target information. It is the most rigorously documented form of remote viewing.
Extended Remote Viewing (ERV) is a more free-form, hypnagogic approach in which the viewer enters a deeply relaxed state and narrates impressions to a monitor in real time. ERV was used in the early days of Project STARGATE and tends to produce richer narrative detail, though it is generally considered harder to control for analytical overlay.

Remote viewing as a formal scientific discipline was born in the early 1970s at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park, California. Physicists Russell Targ and Hal Puthoff โ both credentialed laser physicists with an interest in parapsychology โ began a series of rigorous experiments into extrasensory perception. Their early subjects included former police commissioner Pat Price and New York artist and psychic Ingo Swann.
Initial experiments produced surprising results under controlled conditions. In one celebrated early test, Swann appeared to accurately perceive details of a magnetometer sealed inside a concrete vault at Stanford, producing sketches that engineers confirmed were accurate. The CIA, closely monitoring the research, moved quickly to fund the programme, and SRI's work formally became a classified government intelligence project.
Targ and Puthoff published their early findings in the prestigious journal Nature in 1974 โ a remarkable achievement for parapsychological research โ and later in their book Mind-Reach (1977). Despite fierce scepticism from mainstream scientists, the peer-reviewed publication gave the field a legitimacy it had never previously enjoyed.
Ingo Swann (1933โ2013) is the single most important figure in the development of remote viewing as a discipline. A prolific author, painter, and self-described natural psychic, Swann was recruited as a research subject by Targ and Puthoff in 1972 and quickly became a research collaborator. His most lasting contribution was the development of the Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) protocol.
Swann recognised that raw psychic ability was not enough for practical intelligence applications. What was needed was a rigorous, teachable methodology โ one that could be learned by ordinary people without special gifts, providing consistent, structured results. Working with SRI over several years, Swann developed the CRV protocol's six-stage structure, which remains the gold standard of remote viewing methodology to this day.
Swann's book Penetration (1998) is among his most controversial works, describing alleged remote viewing of classified extraterrestrial locations. His theoretical writings on the "Cosmological Nature of Psi" propose that remote viewing taps into a biologically evolved capacity for non-local information acquisition that predates language.
The classified US government remote viewing programme passed through several names โ GONDOLA WISH, GRILL FLAME, CENTER LANE, SUN STREAK โ before being consolidated under the name STARGATE in 1991. Spanning 23 years and funded by the CIA, DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency), and other intelligence agencies, STARGATE employed trained remote viewers at Fort Meade, Maryland, and tasked them with operational intelligence targets: missing persons, weapons sites, Soviet military installations, and hostage locations.
The programme was declassified and publicly disclosed in 1995, following an evaluation by the American Institutes for Research (AIR). The AIR review concluded that while remote viewing had demonstrated statistically significant effects under controlled conditions, the operational intelligence value had not been proven. The programme was terminated โ though many participants and observers dispute the AIR evaluation's methodology and conclusions.
The most decorated remote viewer in the programme's history, McMoneagle received the Legion of Merit award for his contributions to US intelligence. His book The Seventh Sense is a definitive account of operational remote viewing.

CRV is the most rigorous and widely taught remote viewing protocol. Developed by Ingo Swann, it breaks a session into six discrete stages, each probing progressively deeper layers of target information. A key principle throughout is blinding: the viewer receives only a meaningless coordinate number or alphanumeric tag as a target reference โ no other information. This prevents front-loading (unconsciously knowing the target before the session).
The viewer writes the target coordinate and immediately makes an automatic pen stroke on paper โ the ideogram. This is an unconscious gesture that captures the most basic gestalt of the target (land, water, structure, life form, etc.). The stage is completed in seconds.
The viewer writes down basic sensory impressions: colours, temperatures, textures, sounds, smells, tastes, and dimensional qualities (hard/soft, rough/smooth, large/small). No interpretation or naming of objects. Data is listed in columns.
The viewer produces an automatic sketch of the target's rough spatial layout and dimensional features. Sketching is considered one of the most reliable elements of CRV โ drawings often match target photographs even when verbal descriptions diverge.
More complex data: aesthetics (beauty, starkness, chaos), emotional impressions (awe, fear, tranquility), and beginning dimensional exploration. Concepts may emerge but are treated as potential AOL and handled carefully.
Detailed exploration of the target's spatial dimensions โ heights, widths, interior/exterior spaces, materials, architectural features. The viewer mentally "moves through" the target space.
The deepest stage โ exploring purpose, function, activity, and the human/operational context of the target. Complex concept matrices and modelling are used. Only experienced CRV practitioners work at this stage.
ERV differs from CRV in its approach to the viewer's state of consciousness. Rather than working in a structured, pen-to-paper format, ERV uses a deeply relaxed, near-hypnagogic state โ comparable to the edge of sleep. The viewer lies down or reclines comfortably while a monitor guides them gently toward the target and records their spoken impressions.
ERV tends to produce richer narrative descriptions and more vivid imagery, but also carries a higher risk of analytical overlay and confabulation. It was used extensively in the earliest phases of Project STARGATE before CRV was fully developed. Today, many practitioners use ERV as a complement to CRV rather than a replacement.
TRV is a variant of CRV developed by Ed Dames, a former STARGATE programme manager. Dames adapted the CRV protocol and marketed it commercially as TRV. It follows the same broad structure as CRV but uses slightly different terminology and stage sequencing. Some practitioners consider TRV a simplified, more accessible entry point to CRV's methodology; critics argue it deviates from the most rigorously tested version of the protocol.
Blinding โ ensuring the viewer has no prior knowledge of the target โ is the most critical safeguard in remote viewing research. Without blinding, unconscious cueing (the viewer picking up subtle clues from the tasker or environment) becomes indistinguishable from genuine remote perception.
In double-blind conditions, neither the viewer nor the person administering the session knows the target identity. Targets are typically assigned randomly from a sealed pool and identified only by an arbitrary coordinate number โ for example, "4821/6630." The coordinate has no meaning; it simply serves as a link between the viewer's session data and the sealed target envelope, which is opened only after the session is complete for feedback.
The following is a simplified beginner's guide to basic CRV practice. Note that formal training from a certified instructor is strongly recommended for serious practitioners. This is an overview only โ proper CRV requires careful study of the protocol's full nuances.
Drawing is central to CRV. Use a clean notebook dedicated to your sessions. A smooth-flowing pen is preferable โ you want fluid, unforced strokes for ideograms and sketches.
Ask a trusted friend to select a photograph from a large image pool (national geographic, news archives), seal it in an envelope, and assign it an arbitrary 8-digit number. Do not look at the photo. All you receive is the number.
A calm, distraction-free space where you can sit comfortably at a desk or table. Soft, even lighting. Phones off. Sessions typically run 30โ60 minutes for beginners.
Write the coordinate at the top of your page. Note the date and time. Take three slow, deep breaths and let your body settle.
Make the ideogram. Without thinking about it, let your pen move automatically across the page immediately after writing the coordinate. This gesture โ your ideogram โ captures the target's basic gestalt. Note any motion quality (smooth, jagged, curved, angular).
Probe the ideogram. Slowly trace the ideogram and note the first word that comes to you: land? water? structure? motion? Don't force it โ accept the first impression.
Move to Stage II sensory data. On a fresh section, list raw sensory impressions one at a time: colours, textures, temperatures, sounds, smells, dimensions (large/small, hard/soft). Do NOT name objects. If you find yourself writing "a building" โ that's AOL. Replace it with "vertical, angular, smooth surfaces, grey, cool."
Sketch. Draw whatever spatial shapes, configurations, or layouts arise โ without naming them. Let your hand move. The sketch often contains the most accurate data in the entire session.
Reveal the target. Only after the session is complete, open the envelope. Compare your session data to the photograph. Note what matched and what was AOL. Be honest. Keep all session records for tracking improvement over time.
Front-loading โ knowing anything about the target before your session โ invalidates the session completely. If your friend tells you "the target is something in South America," your conscious mind will fill in the rest, and any impressions you receive will be contaminated by that prior knowledge. The entire methodology of remote viewing depends on radical ignorance of the target until after feedback.
This is why professional remote viewers work with random coordinate numbers assigned by an independent third party, with the actual target sealed in an envelope that is only opened after the session transcript has been completed and signed.
Consistent, patient practice is the key to developing remote viewing skill. Most serious practitioners recommend:
One to three sessions per week, rather than daily marathon sessions that lead to fatigue and increased AOL.
Keeping a dedicated session journal with the date, target coordinate, full session data, and post-feedback notes.
Using large, varied target pools โ photographs from geography, architecture, nature, events โ to prevent your mind from narrowing its expectations.
Finding a practice partner to act as tasker, which prevents self-tasking and keeps the blind condition intact.
Studying the CRV manual (the declassified US Army document is freely available) and supplementing with books from trained instructors.
New practitioners are frequently surprised by how unremarkable remote viewing feels in practice. There are rarely vivid visions or cinematic images. The signal line arrives as vague, fleeting impressions โ a momentary sense of texture, a colour, a spatial feeling, an emotional tone. These impressions are often so subtle that they feel indistinguishable from imagination, which is why the discipline of trusting and recording them without analysis is so important.
Sessions can feel tedious or frustrating, particularly in the early stages. The analytical mind keeps wanting to construct a coherent narrative from the fragmentary impressions โ that is precisely what must be resisted. Progress is measured not by vivid experiences in the session but by the correlation between your session data and the target feedback over many sessions.
Occasional "hits" โ moments where your sketches or sensory data clearly match the target โ can be striking and motivating. These are the sessions that demonstrate that something genuine is happening. Keep all sessions, including the poor ones, for an honest statistical record.
Some practitioners report mild fatigue after extended sessions, particularly during deeper stages. This is normal. Sessions should be stopped when the viewer feels their concentration deteriorating or when fatigue is apparent โ pushing through tiredness dramatically increases AOL.
Emotional reactions to targets are common and should be noted as data. Targets with strong emotional content โ disaster sites, locations associated with tragedy, significant natural events โ often produce corresponding emotional impressions in the viewer. These emotional impressions are themselves data and should be recorded as such, not dismissed.
Vague impressions of textures, shapes, temperatures, and spatial relationships are the norm, not vivid pictures.
Statistical accuracy above chance over many sessions is the meaningful measure โ not perfection in individual sessions.
Sketches and spatial data are often more accurate than verbal descriptions.
Skill improves measurably with structured, consistent practice over months.
Looking up the target, asking questions about it, or receiving any descriptive information before the session is the single greatest error in remote viewing practice. It invalidates results completely and can cause years of wasted effort if practised habitually.
The analytical mind is the enemy of good CRV data. If you find yourself constructing stories ("this is a church in Europeโฆ"), stop, label it as AOL in your notes, and return to raw sensory data. The goal is data collection, not narrative construction.
Both physical and emotional states strongly affect session quality. Tiredness, illness, hunger, anxiety, and emotional disturbance all increase AOL and reduce the quality of signal contact. Wait until you are calm, rested, and well before attempting a session.
Without controlled blinding and systematic feedback, there is no way to distinguish genuine remote viewing from imagination, wishful thinking, or confabulation. Every claim of remote viewing ability must be tested under blind conditions. Anecdotal "amazing hits" without blind methodology are not evidence.
Remote viewing data is probabilistic and unreliable at the individual session level. It should never be used as the primary basis for medical decisions, financial investments, legal matters, or finding missing persons without corroboration from conventional evidence. Even experienced government viewers operated as a supplementary intelligence tool, never the sole source.
Experienced viewers describe occasionally encountering disturbing emotional content when viewing targets associated with trauma, death, or violence. Working alone on such targets without a monitor or support structure is inadvisable, particularly for beginners.
If sessions consistently produce intense anxiety, panic responses, or dissociation that you cannot easily resolve, stop the practice immediately. Seek support from a mental health professional.
If you begin to experience intrusive RV-like impressions in ordinary life that you cannot dismiss, or find yourself unable to distinguish between remote viewing impressions and real sensory experience, stop immediately and seek professional support.
Never attempt remote viewing while driving, operating machinery, caring for children or dependants, or in any other circumstance where perceptual disruption would be dangerous. The practice requires a physically safe, stationary environment.
