Goddess of the sacred hearth

Vesta is one of Rome's most important deities, embodying the sacred hearth fire that sustained both individual households and the Roman state itself. The Vestal Virgins maintained her eternal flame in the Forum Romanum — its extinction was a catastrophic omen for Rome. Unlike other Olympians, she had no image or statue, only her fire.
