Pluto (also called Dis Pater, 'wealthy father') rules the Roman underworld as a stern but lawful sovereign. His name reflects the belief that all mineral wealth rises from beneath the earth. Roman tradition viewed him with reverence rather than terror โ he was a just ruler, not an agent of evil.
