Protectors of the pantry and provisions
The Penates (from Latin penus, 'inner room' or 'pantry') are divine guardians of the family's stored food and provisions. Every Roman family honored the Penates alongside the Lares. The state Penates of Rome, kept at Lavinium, were said to have been carried from Troy by Aeneas, making them a foundation of Roman sacred identity.
