Mars is one of Rome's most important deities โ second in prominence only to Jupiter. Unlike the Greek Ares who personified mere battlefield carnage, Mars embodied martial virtue, Roman military discipline, and even agricultural vitality. As father of Romulus, he was the divine ancestor of the Roman people themselves.
