Divine spirits of the ancestral dead

The Manes are the collective divine spirits of the Roman dead, granted sacred status as di Manes (divine Manes). They were honored with regular funeral rites and annual festivals. The grave inscription Dis Manibus ('to the divine Manes') was one of Rome's most universal religious formulas.

Virgil's Aeneid features the Manes as the shades inhabiting Elysium and the deeper regions of the underworld, encountered by Aeneas on his descent.
Graves across the Roman world inscribed D.M. (Dis Manibus) to dedicate them formally to the protective care of the Manes.

Worship & Cult Context

The Parentalia (February 13-21) was the nine-day festival of honoring ancestral Manes with offerings at tombs.
Feralia on February 21st — the public day for offerings at graves, closing the Parentalia.
Lemuria (May 9, 11, 13) — private rites to appease potentially restless Manes.
Tombs inscribed D.M. (Dis Manibus) to formally dedicate them to the Manes.
