Jupiter is the supreme king of the Roman gods and the guardian of Roman state authority. He governs sky, weather, law, and justice, and is the protector of oaths and treaties. His cult was the absolute center of Roman public religion. The Capitoline temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus ('Best and Greatest') was the most important religious building in Rome.
