Janus is one of the most uniquely Roman deities — the two-faced god of beginnings, gates, transitions, and time. He opens every ritual before all other gods and presides over the start of each new year, month, and day. His double face simultaneously looks to past and future, embodying the Roman reverence for order and transition.
