Ruler of the realm of the dead

Hel rules the vast underworld realm of the same name — the destination of all who die of old age, illness, or any death outside of battle. Her appearance is half-living flesh and half corpse-blue or black, symbolising her dominion over both states. Unlike Valhalla's warrior-feast, Hel's realm is cold, dim, and still — not punishment, but the quiet finality of ordinary death.

Core Myths

Cast into the underworld by Odin, who charged her with rulership over the dead who come to her realm.
When Baldr was killed, he descended to Hel's realm; the gods sent Hermóðr to ask for his return.
Hel agreed to release Baldr only if every being in the nine worlds wept for him — Loki refused, disguised as a giantess, preventing the return.
At Ragnarök, Hel releases her dead to fight alongside Loki.
